I tried it out for the first time in a while. "What is consciousness?"

It's clear that the concept is essentially beyond human comprehension but it still somehow feels like it's beyond GPT-4's capability to give a proper answer.

This was its answer, if you couldn't tell:

> **Consciousness: A Complex, Multifaceted Phenomenon**

Consciousness is a rich, complex, and multifaceted phenomenon that has been extensively explored by philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, and many other disciplines. It is characterized by various aspects, including awareness, perception, intentionality, selectivity, and unity. Consciousness is a subjective experience, and its nature remains a topic of ongoing debate and investigation.

Consciousness is often described as the quality or state of being aware of an external object or something within oneself. It pertains to the relationship between a subject and an object, where the subject becomes aware of the object and experiences it as a unified, coherent whole. Consciousness is essential for our understanding of the world around us, as it allows us to perceive, process, and respond to information from our environment.

The study of consciousness is an interdisciplinary field known as consciousness studies, which combines insights from psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and computer science. Researchers in this field aim to understand the mechanisms, functions, and correlates of consciousness, as well as its relationship to the brain, cognition, and behavior.

Consciousness is a multifaceted concept that has been explored from various perspectives, including philosophical, scientific, and cultural. The nature of consciousness remains a topic of ongoing debate, with different theories and models attempting to explain its mechanisms, functions, and implications. Overall, consciousness is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, enabling us to interact with and understand the world around us.

It's a lot of words for what amounts to "consciousness is a complex and multifaceted aspect of human experience that is essential for understanding the world around us and that's all we really know about it."

Actually, I just realized, that 'answer' from GPT-4 doesn't even actually say anything. It's 100% filler words.

If GPT-4 really is almost on par with a human, then you'd expect it to be able to say something at least somewhat on the level of a 'normal' human. I guess you could say that's what it was trying to do. But then you would expect a normal human to be able to answer a quick question like that with more than "Uh it's complicated and I don't really know, it's not really something you can fully understand."
