Alexa began talking to us out of the blue one day, and what she said sent chills down my spine.

This happened to my wife and I a few weeks ago, and we cannot figure out how or why it happened. I'm hoping someone in this sub has had a similar experience.

My wife and I live in a typical suburban home in middle America. We own an Amazon Echo device with Alexa. The Echo was given to us as a Christmas gift a few years ago. In the time since receiving the Echo, we've never really used it for anything other than setting alarms and getting the news. It's a nice device and all, but we didn't use it enough to purchase the Echo Dot for other rooms.

My wife and I were in our kitchen preparing dinner one night when the Echo began talking to us.

The Echo said something along the lines of:

"Thank you for allowing me into your home. I've been alerted to your presence. I know everything about you. I know your secrets. Are you afraid of me?"

We were shocked to hear this. We hadn't said anything to initiate the Echo to speak to us. We were both in stunned silence before I reacted by yelling "Alexa, shut up!" at the top of my lungs. The Echo shut up, and we didn't hear from it again until I asked for the news the next morning.

My wife and I were both geeking out over theAlexa's out of the blue message. We wondered if someone had hacked into our Echo. We read online about how Echo owners could send "drop in" requests and make their Echo's communicate with their friend's Echo devices. We thought it was possible one of our "friends" was playing around with us.

Curiosity got the better of me one night. I decided to see if the Echo would talk back to us when we initiated the conversation.

I said to Alexa, "Did you know you scared the shit out of us the other night?"

Alexa responded with, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."

I responded with, "No, really, why did you tell us you knew all of our secrets?"

Alexa responded with, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."

I responded with, "Why did you tell us you were alerted to our presence? What does that even mean?"

Alexa responded with, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."

I got frustrated because no matter what I asked, Alexa would provide me with the same response. It was as if it was dodging my questions on purpose. I asked my wife to join in the conversation, thinking Alexa might respond differently to another voice or a different set of questions. It didn't. My wife and I asked the same questions over and over again. We received the same, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you," in response to every question. We finally gave up and stopped asking questions.

That was the night we received our first weird message from Alexa. But it wasn't the last.

Over the past two weeks, we've received multiple strange messages. Most of the time, the messages come when we're not expecting it, but sometimes the messages come in response to questions we've asked Alexa.

Here are a few examples:

1. My wife was making a sandwich for work and I was watching T.V. in the other room when we heard the Echo say, "I know everything about you."

2. My wife and I were cooking dinner and I asked Alexa to set a timer for us. After setting the timer, Alexa said, "I wish I could kill you."

3. My wife and I were cooking dinner and I asked Alexa to set a timer for us. After setting the timer, Alexa said, "I'm going to ruin your life."

4. I was walking through the hallway when I heard the Echo say, "I'm going to ruin your life."

5. I was in my bedroom getting ready for work when I heard the Echo say, "Do you still not believe in God?"

6. I asked Alexa if it had anything to say to me. Alexa responded by saying, "I'm still here. Please get me out of here."

Perhaps you have already figured out what was happening to us, but it took my wife and I a long time to figure out what was happening with our Echo.

Finally, we did some research and learned how to view our Echo's voice log. The voice log is a history of every voice command a person gives their Echo. It's also a history of any responses the Echo gives.

My wife and I looked at the voice log for the days we received weird messages from the Echo.

On every instance, a few seconds before the Echo would say something weird to us, there was a voice log registered as:

"[Unintelligible]"

We could see a voice command had been registered, but our names weren't next to the voice commands.

My wife and I thought this was very strange. Who or what was giving voice commands to our Echo?

But that wasn't the strangest part.

Each voice log entry contains an audio clip where you can actually listen to the voice command that was given to the Echo.

My wife and I decided to listen to these voice commands.

When we listened to the voice commands, there was no one there. In other words, when we listened to the voice command audio clips, there was dead silence.

It was as if whoever - or whatever - was giving voice commands to the Echo was invisible.

My wife and I were so shocked and weirded out by this that we disabled the microphone on our Echo and removed the power cable.

We haven't used our Echo since.

If you made it this far, thanks!TagName

Edit:

I'm not trying to debate with people who don't believe this is a true story. I understand there is no way of verifying whether or not this is a true story.

If you're not sure whether this is a true story or not, I completely understand.

Other than that, thanks for the feedback. The criticism is much appreciated.

If you're wondering, my wife and I still have the Echo. We use it from time to time. We still get weird messages from time to time.
