If you think about the call to do something, anything, for the community, you will realize that your small town or city is not important at all

I live in a "small town" of 20,000 people, and it is nothing but a bunch of people doing their daily lives. Kinda hard to put what I mean into words, but it is like a factory of people. I work, I eat, I sleep, I repeat.

I do my daily routine about 6 days a week, and nothing happens. I do nothing for this town. I walk down the street, and I do not "see my colleagues". I do not "see the smile of a kid I helped". I only see a blur of random people, and I walk by.

If I die tomorrow, literally no one will care, no one will be any worse for it, and no one will even notice. I am a drop in the ocean.

As the old song goes: "If I lived forever, evil's still the same, now I ain't gonna stop until I make you all the same."

Edit: Did you know you can't even burn a building in the US without spending at least 10 years in prison. Your small town is nothing but a police state.
