What is a typical day in the life of an entry level software engineer at Amazon/Facebook/Microsoft?

Everyone always says how terrible the hours are. I have heard how hard it is in finance and that basically once you hit 26 you are washed up. I want to know what real world engineers are doing. How much code are they writing a day? How much time do they have to learn? And what is the ceiling on salary if you hit all your goals?
