I work in a second-hand store and the amount of things you people throw away is mind boggling.

I work in a second hand store and we get a ton of donations every single day. Like, hundreds of bags of stuff a day. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve picked up something that is brand new, or still has the price tag on it, or is amazing condition, and wondered WHY someone would throw this away.

Unopened childrens toys, still in the box with tags, beautiful antique furniture that just needs some dusting, brand new pairs of shoes that have never been worn, beds, clean and fresh bed sheets, clean and still good shampoo conditioner lotion and creams… and so on and so forth.

I’ve worked in a second hand store for several years and the past year I have noticed a huge change in consumerism. I think due to the economy being so bad, things are too expensive and people want to treat themselves. When they get bored of their purchases they just throw them away.

I would say 10-20% of what is given to us is actually salvageable. The rest is literal garbage, like broken, moldy, or entire boxes of crumbs. I don’t get it.

I also don’t understand how people don’t donate decently. We get so much stuff that is absolutely useless, or is broken beyond repair. It’s funny that people think they’re being more environmentally friendly now, but everyone is so lazy and selfish and would rather just throw the garbage in the landfill.

I’ve been in dozens of people’s homes to pick up donations and the amount of unnecessary junk people have is insane. I’ve seen parents buy their newborn babies hundreds of toys and stuffed animals and yet the baby is probably going to grow out of them in a month. Or a family of four who has three play stations. Or two treadmills and a gym membership.

People are so lazy and greedy and a lot of times, I’m grateful I don’t have any children in case the world is like this forever.
