A student in my English class, D, has sever dyslexia. He has an SSO (a study support officer - an adult that helps him individually) and in class work is modified. He and his SSO work together on another desk out the front of the classroom.
On the first day, when I was taking roll I said to D 'hello D' and I asked if he needed to get his SSO, the way I would say to a TA, but he took it as a personal greeting. Now, every time I take roll, he looks up at the roll while I'm marking it and says 'hello, D.' No one else does this, and it's not being mean or mocking, but it's quite obvious that he's mirroring what I said that first lesson.

The issue is that on the first day I didn't say hi to every kid and I shouldn't have, but now I have to give him the same level of greeting as everyone else, how do you handle this? Do you say 'hello D' to start with so that you can stop saying it later on?

Edit: some people have awards... Thankyou. I now intend to do something similar and greet everyone on the roll from day 1 onwards. It isn't how I have done this before, but it will allow me to not say it to D from now on, but still build a relationship and offer other positive interactions. I appreciate all the advice and do appologise for the length of this post, it's my first.
