I still don't get why I hate it

I wrote a short story.

I think it's part of a novel.

I'm editing it still.

I know there are problems with it but I'm not finding them immediately.

I had a friend read it. He also doesn't like it, but he has given me some ideas on improvements.

I've been editing and re-writing for a month now. For various reasons, this is slow going.

When I'm done with this, I want to send it to a pro to critique it, but I still think there is a lot to fix before that.

When I read this story, I know what I mean. I know what I want to do. But I can't seem to make it work. And I can't see it.

At this point, I am still hoping that I will see it, and I'll make it work. I have been working on this project for a while, and it's hard to see if I'm getting anywhere. I feel like I do now more than I did a year ago, but that's still not doing it, and I'm still not there.

I'm starting to think of taking a break from this and doing something else. That tends to help, but I'm not sure.

Long story short, I'm frustrated, and I'm not sure what to do.

Thoughts?
