I promise I'm not trolling with this. Hayao Miyazaki is honestly the best director of all time. Not only are the stories he has written for his films incredibly creative and deep, the worlds and characters he has managed to create are on a completely different level than anything anyone else has managed. Think of that one movie you love that you just can't stop thinking about, that movie that makes you honestly want to be a better person for the world. There are about 8 or 9 Hayao Miyazaki films that are each beyond that bar.

One of his most notable feats is his ability to make children-oriented films that also have an immense depth to them, allowing children and adults to appreciate them almost equally. While his films are obviously animated and intended for children, he treats his subject matter extremely seriously, including themes that are usually confined to very serious and adult films.

A good example to illustrate what I'm talking about is his film Princess Mononoke. The film is set in a fantasy version of medieval Japan and surrounds a conflict between people and nature. While it is an animated film that features various talking animal characters, the plot centers around the fact that humans are cutting down trees and exploiting the natural world, which has caused the animals in the forest to rebel and fight back against humans. The film is centered around a town of humans entirely dependent on steel production (mining, logging, smelting, blacksmithing), and their war against the animals of the forest who are angry at them for destroying the forest. The entire conflict is centered around themes of colonialism, human progress, human destructiveness, etc.

While such a thing might sound like it would be hard to pull off in an animated film, Princess Mononoke has won numerous awards for its storytelling. It is widely considered to be one of the best films of all time, let alone one of the best animated films. Even ignoring the fact that it is animated, Princess Mononoke would still undoubtedly be among the best films of all time.

I don't really know how to end this off. I want to list off all of his great films, but I think I can just say that every single film he has directed is phenomenal. While there are obviously some who are better than others, honestly all of his films and shorts are worth watching while almost none of them are anything less than great. So yeah.

To clarify: I know Orson Welles directed Citizen Kane. I know Stanley Kubrick directed 2001. I know Kurosawa directed Seven Samurai. I know all that. I just honestly think that Hayao Miyazaki has consistently directed films of such a level of quality, and has never really slipped up in the process, that I think he is the best director of all time.

EDIT: There's been some confusion over what exactly it means to change my view. For a comment to be considered a valid counter, you need to get me to tell you that you changed my view, and I won't say that unless you actually manage to change my view. While I have received many good comments (thanks, guys), none of you have posted anything that has actually made me seriously reevaluate my opinion.

For an example of a good CMV, go to this post and read the top few comments. The first comment is particularly good. I'm not asking for any specific type of comment, but something along the lines of what these few comments would be great.

Again, thanks for all the comments so far and I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with in the coming days.

EDIT 2: Holy crap this post blew up and I can't possibly respond to all the comments. To give a quick summary of my thoughts on this thread, it doesn't really make sense to argue on the internet that one person is better than another in some subjective field. While perhaps someone could post some sort of objective thing like an analysis of their filmography showing that they are the best director, it's not really worth arguing subjective questions on the internet. On top of that, it doesn't really matter who you think is the best director, so long as you enjoy the movies that every great director has made.
