\----------------------

Every year, the US spends **over $700 billion** (rest of the world spends **$1.5 trillion**) on military and defence. The Pentagon itself spends **$600 million** **EVERY DAY**. The US is spending three times what China is spending on defence, and **the US is broke**. The country has accumulated debt over **$28 trillion**, with the cost of servicing that debt set to blow out to **over $1 trillion** by the end of the decade.

There's over **500,000 homeless people** in the US, and **41 million people** live in poverty. Americans have the **shortest average lifespan** and **worst healthcare** compared to other developed nations. The country is also **ranked 27th in functionally literate adults**, and **ranked 40th in maths** and **27th in science**.

The military also isn't really being used for defensive purposes. The US hasn't been formally at war since **WW2**, which was 80 years ago. If you include unofficial wars, the US has only not been at war for **21 years** in the past **240 years**. The US has bases in **80 countries** around the world, and has actually **killed at least 20 million people** since the second world war.

I've been able to find statistics that say **57% of Americans** agree with reducing the military budget to focus on internal issues, and **77% agree** that US foreign policy does not benefit the average American.

**EDIT:** I understand that military spending also provides millions of jobs and helps stimulate the economy. However, the US has literally spent over **$6.5 trillion on wars** in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Afghanistan since 2001. If that money was spent on infrastructure, the economy and bettering the nation, it would benefit **everyone**, not just service personnel.

**EDIT 2:** I understand that if the US doesn't spend money on defence, other countries like China and Russia will. But that doesn't help the US and just adds to the global problem of militarism. I personally see it as wasted money when it could be used better.
