ELI5: What is happening in the Middle East and why is it relevant to Americans

We hear in the news about Isis this and Syria that, bombs and explosions, and Trump saying he's going to ban all Muslims from entering the US. How does all of this affect America? I'm rather confused about the situation and would appreciate anyone with more information explain to me.
