It just hit me how heinous office hours are, and how teachers should work their class schedule.

I had never taken an online class. They’re not as bad as people say they are. I think it’s because I’m a terrible procrastinator. In general, I just wanted to say that I have newfound disgust for office hours, and how teachers profit off of them, even though they are supposed to be there for teaching.

I’m in medical school and I am legit surprised that there aren’t more teachers that profit off of this. I know I would if I could. Anyways, I have taken an online course and it was great. The teacher did 90-min standard zoom calls, 3 times a week. He was willing to do whatever needed to be done, and would leave the call open after office hours for ad hoc questions. He would work his schedule around the class’ requests. This was at a top 5 school in the US.

As I’m doing online classes, I thought why not do a regular class. I took a class at my local university, 5K per credit hour. It ended up being 9K. So I took a class that was $9K. It was a disaster, I dropped after a month. My Prof would just show up late, after 15 min of being late, and apologize. Annoying. Then, when I asked him questions, he was not as forthcoming with answers, and when I asked questions about office hours, he was like, “Office hours are 3 pm on Wednesday.” And would pretty much end the question by saying, “I’m not responsible for your attendance or if you don’t come to office hours.”

He was just completely different, and it was such a stark difference. Anyways, I’m back to online classes, and my daily routine is so much better. I have so much more time to work on my studies, work, and play. I feel so much better, and I feel like this is BS. The system is BS, and profs are BS for profiting so much. I spent 9K on a class that I dropped after a month. It was a waste of time and money.

I know this is nothing, but I don’t think teachers should be profiting so much off of office hours. It’s such a scam. They should work around us. We should have the ability to see their calendars, and be able to schedule appointments. They should work around us. We should be able to request classes. They should work around us. We should not be judged. There should be consequences for being late, not on the students’ side, but on both sides.

I’m so glad to be back in online classes, but this is a disaster. I don’t know what to make of it.
