We can't even correlate brain activity with thought, and we think we can talk about qualia?

There's a bunch of threads on here about qualia, and I'm not calling out anyone or anything, but I feel like it's worth pointing out that we have absolutely no idea how consciousness arises from brain activity.

For example, if you look at fMRI or EEG data, you can't infer from that what someone is thinking. It's not even remotely close. If you were to perform an EEG on someone, you might find some correlation with certain brain regions that light up when someone is performing a certain task, but that's not remotely close to **actually knowing** what someone is thinking. You might know that they're solving a math problem, but you don't know what number they're thinking about. You might know that they're angry, but you don't know why they're angry.

Hell, even the computers that perform massive amounts of computation can't perform the same tasks as the human brain, so why do we think we have any idea how the human brain works? And even if we did, why do we think we have any idea how to talk about how our consciousness arises from that activity?

To me, this is all kind of like reading a book and seeing the words, but not knowing how to speak the language. Sure, you can describe English and define what sentences are, but unless you can speak english you have no idea what the actual contents of the book are.

I'm not saying we should stop talking about qualia. I just think it's important to have some perspective.
