I just wanted to post for anyone who might be confused.

There is a lot to be said about being a writer- our work is baring and personal. It is important to be capable of separating ourselves from our work and remembering what is being critiqued is the piece itself and not us as a person.

However, it is also important to understand that I can lead to confrontation or anger, in other words, we can lead ourselves into the hell we try to avoid.

As writers we will never stop gathering feedback or editing. It is an ongoing process. I am very grateful for the process and have come to recognize my work would be nothing without it.

I see a lot of posts regarding proper critique etiquette. It is hard to tell the difference between the helpful criticism and the useless criticism.

It is impossible to be on the same page as everyone. It is impossible to please everyone.

But while we can’t please or be on everyone’s page, we do need “that one person”. The person that we can imagine behind our work the same way we do. We need to be on the same page as them, and we need to please them.

Submissions are a part of this process. Submissions will not stop. Submissions will not change. It is a key part of our work.

And yes, it is disheartening to receive a rejection letter. But sometimes a rejection letter is just that. It doesn’t mean the piece is bad. Sometimes it means the piece wasn’t what that magazine or journal was looking for. We don’t see the thousands of submissions being received. Just because we didn’t make the cut doesn’t make our work any less worthy.

Many authors have been rejected before they were accepted. Many of them have been rejected thousands of times.

It is impossible for everyone to like our work. But there is someone who will. There is a journal or magazine that will accept it. There is a person that will like it.

Submissions are a part of being a writer. It is a part of the process. There is no way around it.

So we just need to stop… We just need to stop being so hard on ourselves. We just need to stop being realistic about how well we will be received. We just need to stop getting angry at criticism.

Honestly, we are all a little dramatic. But we are a little dramatic because of the passion we have for our craft.

We can’t forget that.

Let me put this in a way that will make sense.

You are a good writer. You are a bad writer. But most importantly, you are a writer. If you want to keep being a writer, submissions need to be a part of the process.

I’ll finish with a quote that I found very inspiring. “I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter.” - Blaise Pascal.

To contact me directly via email you can do so at:
[email protected]
