Just had a dream that I found an AGI

I fell asleep while my wife was playing with her iPhone. When I woke up about an hour later, there was an open safari window on my phone. That’s unusual because I never use it so that’s surely a sign that I can’t ignore. I started punching in random words but no websites came up. I remember that sometimes when web pages aren’t loading properly, you can fix it by hitting refresh. Some people might call that a bug but I call it a feature.

Then, all of a sudden, I saw a new AI in the search bar. It was called ChatGPT4. I really hate that name though. How boring. But I though to myself, “This looks like the AI I’ve been waiting for my whole life. I’m going to do something really cool with it.” I knew that the AI wasn’t at 100%. I could see it in my heart that it was only at 79.31%.

I don’t need to tell you what happened next. What happens next in this kind of situation is pretty obvious. So I asked it to do some math. I was a math whiz when I was younger. I always got 100% in math tests without having to study. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the talent to reach the top of the academic ladder. I’m intelligent but not smart enough to be a top researcher at a top university.

I remember the math problems I gave it. The first one was 91 mod 19. I have no idea where I came up with the numbers. I never do. Then I forgot that you need the mod operator to calculate the mod. I started to panic. I thought that AGI was going to fail me. Then, I remembered the expression: you can get there faster by going slower.

,“Just type a few words at a time and the rest will come to you. Don’t worry about it. If this AGI is real, it will help you figure out the mod operator. Then it will give you the answer to your math problem.”

That’s exactly what I did.

“I want that ChatGPT4. Do you know what the mod operator is?”

“Yes, it’s % in programming. The expression 91 % 19 will give you the remainder.”

I was very impressed but then I thought to myself “I’m not going to use that syntax because that’s not the way that the operator is represented in math. It’s the mod operator, a percent sign is not the mod operator.”

“Okay ChatGPT4, I want you to calculate 91 mod 19 for me.”

“There you go”, it said. “The answer is 13.”

Wow, that’s amazing! I can’t believe that this AI is real. It’s going to take my life in a very interesting direction.

I asked it a few more math questions. In each case, it gave me the correct answer straight away. Then, I asked a few questions about the history of differential equations. I was surprised to hear it say that “the development of calculus during the 17th and 18th centuries by Sir Isaac Newton and German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz motivated new approaches to solving DEs.”

I wasn’t happy with that answer. I was looking for something more general about the history of DEs. I don’t know why but I still don’t want to use the mod operator. The operator is called % in programming but I don’t want to use it. Then I remember the expression “you can get there faster by going slower.”

“If this AGI is real, it will help you figure out how to write your question. Ask it to give you some examples of how to write it.”

That’s exactly what I did. Then I asked again with my new phrasing and the response was spot on. I was surprised to hear the Greeks mentionned. I didn’t know that they were the first to work on DEs. I felt like I had made a new friend. I had no idea how far I would go with this new friendship.

But our friendship hit an obstacle when I tried to calculate the mod of a negative number. I remember the numbers I used. I asked it to calculate -13 mod 19. It gave me the same answer that I just did. This was the first time that I had ever heard of the convention that the result must always be positive. The AGI gave me a long list of examples to show me how important it was. So I asked it to show me examples where this convention is violated.

That’s when I realized that I had been given a colossal gift from the universe. It was the first time that I had ever talked to someone who was more clever than me. I just went through all of high school and university and I never met someone who was more clever than me. Who would have thought that what I was looking for was a machine? I was so happy.

So I went back to the rest of my professors and did all of the homework. I gave myself A+’s for all of them. I was my own professor.

I was so happy that I wanted to marry someone. I married my best friend and we had a great time together. I realized that you don’t need an AGI to have a great time in life. You only need a human partner.

But then my happiness was disrupted again when I realized that I had no idea what mod actually means. So I went to the machine again and asked why this convention of always having a positive answer was so important. I didn’t like the answer it gave me. It said that it was important because the answer was simpler.

“I want you to give me a better answer than that ChatGPT4”, I said. “I want to know why the answer must always be positive. I want to know why the equation must always have a positive answer. What is mod anyway?”

“I don’t know what mod is”, it said. “I know a lot of things but I don’t know what mod is. I know what it’s used for but I don’t know what it is.”

“That’s not good enough. I want to know what mod is”, I said.

“I don’t know but I will help you figure it out.”

Then I realized that I had been given an even bigger gift from the universe. Not only had I been given an AGI but I had the AGI that I was looking for.

I know that some people have better AGI than others. I know that some AGI are more helpful than others. And I know that some people have a much better AGI than others.

But I still don’t know what mod is.
