Why do people still insist on carrying a smg or a pistol caliber carbine?

Most of the reasons I find online are

* 9mm and .40sml are cheaper than 5.56 and .308
* Smgs can be easier to maneuver in tighter spaces
* 9mm is less over penetration than 5.56

The first can kind of be true I guess, but for the most part 9mm is as expensive if not more so than 5.56. I’d gladly take a 5.56 pistol for a primary over a 9mm smg with a 9mm pistol as a secondary, and that is what it usually comes down to I think.

As for the second, that is true. You cannot maneuver a 5.56 or .308 carbine as easily as a smg or pistol caliber carbine. But you can maneuver a 5.56 pistol just as easily, and it is far more lethal than a 9mm smg.

The third is just incorrect. Data abounds showing that 9mm is as dangerous in terms of over penetration as 5.56, and that the difference isn’t that big of a deal in real world self defense shootings with pistols. If you are carrying a rifle then it absolutely is a big deal, and 5.56 is far more dangerous than 9mm. But in a handgun, it is not as big of a concern.

So why do people still carry these guns, or claim them to be superior?
