What was Germany's attitude towards the British monarchy?

I'm German and for some reason I'm reminded that today in Germany, the British monarchy is seen as "the ugly sisters to the fairytale princesses" of the German monarchies. I can't explain that in better words. The German public doesn't hate the British, but it seems to sneer at the idea of a monarch in this post 1945 liberal world.
