How did the world’s economy not collapse after the end of slavery?

With the end of slavery, millions of formerly enslaved people were thrust into the world and were being paid for their labor. There must have been a massive increase in labor costs as a result. How did the world handle this massive change in labor costs? Did wages decrease?
