When a man was a boy, a wise old man said to him, “Do you want to know the secret to life? Why don’t you spend a day in the library?”

Xiao checked out Kafka, Borges, and Ovid, the holy trinity of men who knew the meaning of life. As he read, three great doors were revealed to him: the door of Despair, the door of Confusion, and the door of Transformation.

He opened the door of Despair and was immediately blinded by a light so bright, he was forced to close the door. It was too much to bear. Why was life so cruel?

He opened the door of Confusion, and was met with a thousand voices all arguing. He did not know who to believe.

He opened the door of Transformation, and was met with a man who sat in perfect stillness.

“Show me the secret to life,” Xiao said.

“You have been living life backwards,” said the man. “A caterpillar must become a butterfly. Do not search for meaning in how you entered the world. Instead, search for the meaning in how you will leave it.”

Xiao was lost. “What do you mean?”

“You cannot change who you are,” said the man. “But you can change who you will become. Do not look for the meaning of life in why or how you were born. Search for meaning in how you will give your life. This is the path of the sage.”

And with that, Xiao understood.

He closed the door and, in doing so, found that he was once again sitting at a desk in the library. But before he could return his books, the wise old man appeared to him.

“Did you discover the secret to life?”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

Xiao tried to open his mouth but the words would not come.

The wise old man smiled knowingly. “You cannot say?”

Xiao shook his head.

The old man chuckled. “Then you have not learned it yet.”

And with that, the old man lifted his staff, and like a bolt of lightning, Xiao was catapulted from the library back to the time when he was a boy and first asked his question in the first place.

And when the wise old man said to him, “Do you want to know the secret to life? Why don’t you spend a day in the library?”

Xiao said, “No, I’m not ready yet.”

---

Anyway, I wrote this about a month ago, and I think it's the best thing I've written so far. I'm really excited about it. So, please read it and give me your critique! However, it's an allegory, so I would prefer it if you critiqued it on the level of the parable, the message, the symbolism, and the themes. Please look at the story and try to see what the story is saying deeper, and critique the deeper level of the story, rather than the surface level of the story.

I think that's it.
