My dad is the most wonderful dad in the world. He even lets me stay up an extra hour if I do all of my homework and he never makes me finish my vegetables when we sit down to eat. I love him more than my dog, Buster, and he’s the best dog in the world too. The only thing is that he may be hiding something from me. I think he may be magic.

There are a lot of clues, and I have been watching him for weeks now. Like for an instance last week, we were playing a game of cards. He was teaching me how to play poker. When it was time to be dealt, he made this weird motion with his hands, kind of like a wave. We got out cards like normal, but I do believe he did some magic there.

Another time that he did something weird was when we were playing a board game. He had moved one of his pieces the wrong way. I called him on it, and he told me that he was just testing himself. He rolled the dice and waved his hand in that motion again, and low and behold he got to move it back. I know he did something to the dice.

I have been watching him when I get into trouble too, and sure enough he does that wave thing and whatever I broke always gets fixed. I keep telling him that he is doing magic, but he just tells me that I have a wild imagination.

I really don’t care if he is magic or not. I just think it would be awesome.

****

I decided that I was going to confront him. No more messing around. I went to his office and slammed the door and told him that the entire city thinks that he is magic.

“I can do anything that I want to do. I don’t need magic,” he said back nonchalantly.

“I have seen you do things that no one can do. You aren’t fooling anyone,” I said back.

“You aren’t going to get anything from me, you might as well go,” he said.

“Too late for that,” I said.

I heard a voice behind me. “Too late for what?” it said.

It was mom. I really didn’t want to talk to her about this, but I had to.

“Dad is magic and he won’t tell me,” I said.

“You mean you’re magic, right dear,” she replied. She looked at my dad and smiled. He just looked at me. He wanted me to figure out what she was saying.

“Am I magic?” I asked.

“Yes dear you are. You can do anything that you want to. Why else would you think that your dad is magic when you have been doing all of that stuff yourself,” She said.

I started to go through all of the possibilities in my head. Yes, it made sense. I had been doing a lot of the things that dad was doing.

*Wait a minute.*

“Have I been doing magic my whole life?” I asked.

“Of course dear,” she said.

“Then why haven’t I known? Why wouldn’t you tell me,” I asked.

“Your dad thought that you should figure it out for yourself. You’re old enough now anyway,” she replied.

I started to think back, and I could remember doing magic my whole life. I figured out how to make my room tidy itself when I was two. Dad was very proud of me. I guess it makes sense now.

“Why do I even have chores if I can do magic?” I asked.

“Because your dad and I want you to be normal,” she said.

“Normal? Really? Even if I can do magic,” I asked.

“Yes. Magic isn’t a substitute for a good life. Having magic doesn’t mean that you don’t have to do anything. Sometimes it just makes things lazy and easy. We don’t want you to be like that,” she said.

“But what if I want to be like that,” I asked.

“Then that is your choice,” dad said.

I turned around to face him. He was smiling.

“You knew that I was going to figure it out. You could have told me,” I said.

“I could have, but you needed to figure it out for yourself. You are an adult now. You can do what you want. If you don’t want to do chores then don’t. But remember, it’s good to keep yourself busy,” he said.

I can do whatever I want?

****

I didn’t do a single chore that week. I didn’t even touch a dish. My room was always tidy and I didn’t lift a finger. I went to school and did everything that I needed to do, but when it came to my free time I didn’t do anything. I played video games and watched Netflix. I didn’t even get off the couch. Life was easy.

But it was boring.

I was sitting on the couch when my mom and dad came in. They smiled at me.

“So?” my dad said.

“So what?” I asked.

“So are you happy,” he replied.

“Yes I am. I don’t have to do anything and I get to do what I want,” I said. Almost as soon as I said it I knew that it was wrong.

“Are you happy though?” my mom asked.

“I guess not,” I said.

“Then go back to doing what you were doing. You were happy then,” my dad said.

“Why were you so against me doing magic in the first place?” I asked.

“So that you can get a good job and support yourself,” he said.

“But I can just wave my hand and make money come to me. Why would I need a good job,” I asked.

“Does that sound right? Does it even sound good?” he asked.

“No. That sounds lazy,” I replied.

“Then don’t do it. Work hard for what you want,” he said.

I stood up. I was going to go clean my room the normal way. I waved my hand.

“Did you just undo all of my work?” my dad asked.

“Yes I did,” I replied.

He chuckled. I went upstairs.

****

After that day I stopped doing magic.

****

I am 24 and I am in med school.

I have a boyfriend and he is great.

I still don’t do magic.

There is still magic though.

****

*Edit: Wow, you guys are awesome. Thank you! I didn’t expect it. I am going to write more, and I think I will turn this into a series. Next chapter will be up in a few days.*
