No, artists are not going to just be "directors"

Increasingly this is the general tone from people who are trying to defend ai art - they say that traditional artists just need to realize they are directors.

They need to realize that's not how it works. Artists arent just internal visionaries, theyre also creators. The brushstrokes they paint and the lines they draw are how they create the piece. The fact that they're there creating the piece and not someone else is a huge part of what makes the piece what it is. It's not just about having an idea and then telling people what to do, it's about realizing the piece of art with your own skills, using your own two hands to create it. If someone else makes the piece, it's not yours anymore. It's theirs.

It's not the same to be the director and the actor. Theres a huge difference between the roles of an actor and director. The director does not turn the lights on, they do not find the actors and studio, they do not turn the camera on, they do not write the music for the film, they do not cut the scenes together. They might do some of those, or they might not. The role is vastly different, and if these people think that artists can hold both roles and maintain their individuality there's something wrong with their understanding of this.

Sure, an artist can use ai as a tool, but they are still using ai. They are still giving up all the things that make the art theirs in the first place.
