What was life like in the 80s/90s if you weren't into pop culture

I've always seen this image that the 80s and 90s were all about glamour, partying, and excess. I've seen so many images of people having "the time of their life" in the 80s and 90s, but I can't help but feel like most people weren't having that good of a time. What did everyday life look like for people in the 80s/90s if they weren't into pop culture?
