Why is the AR platform so wide spread and used in the US?

Not a mean statement, just a question for discussion. I live in the UK, so I’m just wondering why the ar seems to be the most popular platform in the US. Is it the military using them? Or just a mass produced weapon and are the cheapest? I’m always looking to learn about firearms and the culture in the US.
