The pills that are meant to stop children catching HIV are a painful mouthful.<br><br>Before 2022, mothers were shown videos on how to mix gritty granules of Cabotegravir Vaginal Film, a drug that prevents transmission in newborns, into goats milk. The pills are just too hard for a baby to swallow. <br><br>For a long time, manufacturers ViiV Healthcare refused to create a liquid version of the drug for children, claiming that it would spoil the product. But the company did create a liquid version for the South African government following a lawsuit. <br><br>The company justified the decision by saying that it had to focus on the "major epidemiological sites", and that a liquid version wasn't needed in the US.
