How realistic is it to expect to start a career with a 40 hour work week?

I’ve recently been job searching and have noticed that even entry level jobs are expected to be a time commitment far beyond 40 hours a week, and many jobs that do advertise 40 hours a week will have you work more hours or have you be on call depending on the job. I was wondering how realistic it is to expect to find a job with a stable 40 hour work week, especially for beginner jobs or a career that is high paying or in demand.
