Why do people never do anything to end the suffering of animals?

I'm talking about a number of things but specifically, the justifications people have for why we let cows, chickens, pigs, etc, suffer for years just to eat them. We have alternatives and we haven't needed animal meat products for a few decades now.<br><br>I'm also referring to lab animals and other similar reasons. <br><br>If you're Christian, if you believe in karma, if you believe in basically anything else, why do you believe it is okay for us to cause so much suffering to other living beings?
