I (22F) recently turned down a job offer because they weren't willing to discuss remote work options.

Hey guys,

My impression was that remote work was basically the norm at this point, but the company I was speaking with (who is a large tech firm) isn't open to discussing it. By all accounts from Chambers, current employees, and Google reviews, their remote work policy is **STRICTLY** in-office. I saw a few posts on Chambers of people asking for remote work as far back as last year and was told repeatedly that they're not interested in flexible work options. I found this to be pretty surprising because I had expected them to dip their toes into it at least. They did have people working remote during the height of the pandemic, but switched back to in office as soon as they could without fear of lawsuits.

I'd be moving from my home state for this opportunity, and I'm a pretty young woman still - I don't have family nearby to lean on for childcare, and it's just not realistic or in the cards for me right now to pursue a position that doesn't offer remote work options. I told them this, and they were pretty adamant that they're not willing to consider partial or full remote work options. I made them aware of the job offer I had that included remote work options, and they still weren't willing to make any concessions. They offered some assistance with childcare costs, but I'm just concerned that I won't be able to balance both without help from family.

Having worked remotely since 2019, and basically being recruited right out of college for a role that was meant to be in-office-I'm just kind of surprised that this is the case. It's definitely given me pause. How common is this type of situation?

What advice would you guys have for someone in my situation?
