I never understood the extreme patriotism in the US

As an European I never understood the extreme patriotism in the US, I mean I understand patriotism, I feel proud to be German, but you guys literally almost worship your country. I personally feel like the US is not really that great as it is hyped, I know many Americans love it that much that they never leave the country or only once in their life and they talk so much about freedom while being super strict in many things.
