Why would I pay for Crunchyroll when I can watch anime for free on the app?

I recently downloaded the crunchyroll app when I was overseas so that I could watch anime on the plane (I don't want to waste my precious data). The app allowed me to watch anime for free with Japanese subs, with only a few ads here and there. I had my headsets on, so I couldn't hear them anyway. I could also install the app on my phone and get the same experience as I would on my laptop. At the end of the day, I don't think that I could justify paying for a subscription. All in all, I don't see why anyone would pay for a subscription when you can get the same experience for free. The premium subscription only offers English subs and maybe a few extra features (which I can't be bothered to look into). I wouldn't pay just to watch English subs alone.
