I am a student and thought I’d start an unobtrusive hobby that I can do from home. I’ve had a small terrarium and waterfall since last year but they haven’t been the most active pets. I recently moved to a new place and in the process lost all of my shrimp that were in my water features. Between the move and my zoom classes, I just wasn’t able to spend time tending to them like I should have. I think I have learned from my mistakes though.

I am certain that I want to start breeding shrimp and am currently deciding between cherry shrimp and f1 tiger shrimp. My parents both told me to start with tigers as I will be less upset if I lose them as opposed to my cerries.

I am planning to start small with 1-3 groups of shrimp and hope to get 1-3 breeding groups of each of the species. Would this be too many different groups for a new breeder to handle?

I am also planning to make 1-2 of the shrimp setups completely plant only. I have read that some plants are toxic to shrimp but I’m not sure of the specifics. Does anyone have a list of shrimp safe plants and waterfall safe plants?

I am also planning to make one of the breeding groups a waterfall. I have read that waterfalls can blow shrimp off of the ground but I want to try to make one as a breeding group anyway.

I have decided that I will have to buy a commercial filter for my waterfall as I don’t have the room or money for a sponge filter. Many of the filters that I have found are just unobtrusive boxes that hang off the side of the tank but I do not want my waterfall to look like an aquarium. Should I be worried about the noise of the filter or will it be drowned out by the water?

Is there anything else I should be careful of as a new breeder?

TLDR: I am new to breeding and intending to breed tigers and cherries. I don’t know if I should go all out with both species at once.
