CMV: To say that the cartoons of Tom and Jerry, Pepe Le Pew, and Looney Tunes are "racist" is a lie.

I'm fairly sure that most people will disagree with this take, and that's why I'm calling on you to change my view.

Let me preface: Tom and Jerry, Pepe Le Pew, and Looney Tunes are all older cartoons. Tom and Jerry was first released in 1940, Looney Tunes was first released in 1930, and Pepe Le Pew was first released in 1945. It's true that these shows have "racist" caricatures and archetypes in them. I would argue that first, these are cartoons that were created and aimed at a younger audience. This is important because as of 2022, the US population was 13% Black and 18% Hispanic. Therefore it makes sense to include more white people in your animation than Black or Hispanic people, and when you DO include Black and Hispanic people, they aren't going to be the best archetypes. Additionally, there is always a difference between being the bully and being the victim. Tom always loses to Jerry. Pepe Le Pew always gets outsmarted by the women he chases. Elmer Fudd always loses to Bugs Bunny. I think that these cartoons should be kept, but instead of saying, "Oh well, back then the world was more racist, so the cartoons can be racist too," we should all understand that the cartoons should be judged as children's entertainment. Does the content of this children's entertainment condone racism? Absolutely not. It's cartoon violence and silly antics, which is a lot like what you see outside of the house of a toddler. I think that it's okay to have racist caricatures present in the entertainment, as long as what's presented doesn't promote racism. In my opinion, Tom and Jerry, Pepe Le Pew, and Looney Tunes do not do this.

Therefore, I think that racist and racially insensitive caricatures are okay in children's content if they don't condone racism.

**EDIT:** I'll get back to you all once I figure out how to use this website.

**EDIT2:** Well, the day has come when I have to say that "this is my final message to you all." I'd like to first say that I'm very happy that I posted this. It's extremely interesting to hear about everyone's viewpoints! I didn't expect so many responses, and I didn't expect so many to be positive and constructive. I do apologize for not being able to respond to every comment. Some people asked for TL;DRs of my comments, I didn't do that because I didn't see a need for it because most of my comments were pretty short. Some people also pointed out that I didn't answer their questions, first of all, I apologize, and second of all, I likely didn't see it, since this is my first time using Reddit. I also apologize for calling Looney Tunes by the name "Tooney Tunes." It's been since I've watched it so I forgot. I also apologize for thinking that Tom was the mouse, and Jerry was the cat. I also didn't expect the surge of "you're racist!" and "you're defending racism!" comments. I'd like to say that believing that I'm racist because I think it's okay for children's shows to have racist caricatures present is not a well thought out belief in the slightest. I would also like to say that I am NOT defending racism! I am saying that it is okay for children's media to HAVE racist caricatures as long as they are presented in a non-racist way. Thank you to everyone who was willing to have a civil discussion. Thank you all for trying to change my view.

It has not been changed.
