What do you do if you’re 37 (f) and still got barely anything saved?

I wrote this on a now defunct, older Chambers account so it’s essentially from 2019 but I’m bringing it back.

I’ve done the opposite of what I always knew I should do. I never thought I’d be in this position; I come from a middle class family and got through high school and college with minimal debt. I’ve always made good money for my age, and I never had kids. For all intents and purposes, I should have a ton saved for retirement.

But I don’t. I have about $7k saved for retirement, $15k in regular savings, and enough in my IRA that if I cash it in, I can buy a new car. I’m not broke, but I’m not where I thought I’d be at my age.

So here’s my question: where do I start? I feel overwhelmed by my lack of savings and I know I need to do better, but I’m not sure where to go from here.

TL;DR: I’m 37 with barely anything saved. Where do I start?
