I’ve Been Flying for almost Twenty Hours and the Flight Attendants Won’t Stop Crying

I’m not sure how much longer I can handle this.

Our plane took off from New York around 5:30 this morning and I was excited because I had a window seat. I always try to choose a window seat so I can lean against the window and sleep. It’s just easier.

I shared the three person row with an older couple who kept to themselves. I think they were in their sixties and assumed they were going on vacation. They read books andcrosswords. Every time the flight attendants came by, they were super nice. I think the husband liked one of the flight attendants because he asked her about her entire life story and she patiently answered him. I couldn’t hear everything but it sounded like your standard small talk.

Then lunch came and we were all served chicken or pasta. The wife wanted pasta but they were out so she got the chicken and said she was going to eat her husbands pasta instead. I offered to switch with her and she accepted. I like pasta.

I fell asleep after lunch and slept for a few hours. The elderly couple left their window shade open and the sun shone on my face, so I finally had to close the shade to block it out.

When I woke up I asked one of the flight attendants what time it was. “It’s around 1:30,” she said, “but don’t worry, we’re almost there.” She seemed nice. I asked her how long the flight was supposed to take. “Around 6 hours,” she answered. I was shocked. I didn’t think she was serious. I thought she had misspoken. The flight couldn’t be six hours and we’d already been on the plane for seven.

“Excuse me,” I said. I was trying not to be presumptuous but I was a little confused. “I thought you just said we’d already been on the plane for seven hours. What did you mean when you said it’s a six hour flight?”

“Oh I’m so sorry, miss,” she said. I could tell she had been crying and the makeup under her eyes was running. “I didn’t mean to confuse you. I think I did. I’m sorry. Its been a long flight.”

“Please don’t apologize,” I said. “I just want to know how long this flight is supposed to be.”

“Look, miss,” she said. “I’m going to be frank with you. We’ve been flying for almost eight hours and I’m not sure how much longer it’s going to take. Ok?” She began to cry silently. “I think you should just go back to sleep now.”

I didn’t know what to say. I felt like I was living in a dream. A flight shorter than my drive to work shouldn’t take fourteen hours. I decided to go to sleep for a while thinking the flight attendants were just screwing with me, that we’d land in a few hours and that was it. But after a few hours passed and the sun hadn’t moved in the sky, I knew something was wrong.

I don’t even know how I’m posting right now. I don’t have reception on my phone but for some reason I can send all sorts of text and the flight attendants say there’s free wifi. It makes no sense.

The flight attendants keep walking up and down the aisles crying and passing out food and water. They seem so overwhelmed and I wish I could help. They look like they’re in so much pain. Like they’re living through a nightmare and can’t wake up. I can’t help but feel the same way.

It’s been almost twenty hours and I don’t know what to do. I have to get to work in two days and if this flight doesn’t end I might lose my job.

I’m going to try and find someone in charge now. There has to be a pilot or captain or something. I’ll update when I can.
