Why is the US economy cyclical?

I have come to learn that the US economy is highly cyclical, with major recessions occurring fairly regularly. It is very hard for me to see why this should be so, as I don't see why the US's vast industrial base can't supply demand. I mean, the US had a major economy in WW1 and WW2, when it was ahving a major war.
