Is anybody else scared of the upcoming school year?

We had a staff meeting today to plan the logistics of reopening, and I am feeling extremely uncertain and anxious about it.

1. No teacher aides- they are being reassigned to bus duty. So we have to wrangle 20+ Kindergartners by ourselves.
2. No bus monitors- bus drivers are expected to manage 70+ kids, and to be on the lookout for signs of Covid.
3. No volunteers- we usually have classroom volunteers who are essential for smaller group activities, and also help wrangle recess duty.
4. Only 3 playground rotations for 20+ students and one teacher. This is hard enough with teacher aides, and again- we will be expected to wrangle the kids by ourselves. If we have a meltdown inside- we at least have extra support, but not outside.
5. Limited or no library time- in case kids breathe too close to each other.
6. No special classes- we have to rotate through teachers instead of kids going to the classes in the building.
7. We have to complete an on-line training module for Covid.
8. If kids test positive, the classroom and bus they ride on will be shut down for 2 weeks. (I can imagine the parents are going to love that...)
9. "We understand that this is going to be difficult, but you'll make it work." I guess that means that we don't have to worry about the kids or ourselves, we just have to make it work.

I have been teaching for 24 years, and I have never felt so uncertain about returning to school.

Back to the drawing board to revise and likely simplify lesson plans.

I am very concerned about this upcoming year- class sizes are large, and we have many students that come from lower income families. We are going to be expected to wrangle classroom meltdowns solo, manage buses, and manage recess by ourselves.

I am not sure how we are going to keep the kids safe. They are still going to be kids. They will still breathe in close proximity to each other. They will still have meltdowns. They will still fight and grab at each other. Honestly, I cannot imagine how we are going to do this. I will do my best, but I am NOT feeling confident at this juncture.

What are your district's plans?
