AITA for taking back my car after my former friends and their friends whose car I had been helping fund wrecked it and stopped paying for it?

My dad and I bought a car for me and my friends and I to drive myself and my friends around senior year. I have very good grades and strong understanding of money, but no job. However, I contributed equally to the car fund my friends and I came up with when we got the car. I funded well over half of the car on my own, but my friends would kick in each month for gas, insurance, and payment. <br><br>I drove several of my friends around everyday, either to school, after school activities, their part time jobs, parties, and other things. But I never felt like I was being taken advantage of because they were all good friends of mine and I was happy to help. That was when my dad told me it was time to move out as our house was being sold and he was moving to a different part of the country to live closer to my brother not me. I decided to go to college in the city where my dad was moving to and got an apartment and a job.<br><br>My friends back home continued to use the car and I was fine with that, but I told them I didn’t want to pay a third of the car fund anymore. They agreed, but asked if they could still pay the $200 a month they were paying me and I agreed. This went on for three months, and I remember going out to eat and the bill was $50 and my former friend paid with a $100. I jokingly asked him if he was doing well, and he said he was getting by. I was confused because they owed me $600 and hadn’t paid me in months. <br><br>I asked them about it and they said that they didn’t have the money and were scraping by to pay for the insurance, gas, and car payment, and they had already paid me $600. I told them that they owed me over $4000 and that I wanted it back, but they told me that I wasn’t driving the car anymore and they paid me the $600 they owed me. I offered to let them keep the car if they paid me the money they owed me, and they refused and that’s when I realized how shitty of friends they were. <br><br>I had spent $9000 of my own money on the car, and they only paid me back $2400, leaving me with a net of $6600 spent on the car, and they refused to pay me back the $4000 they owed me. I was angry, and the next weekend I drove back home, and picked up the car. <br><br>They were furious and tried to fight me, but I gave them an ultimatum, either pay me, or give me my car keys and let me take the car back. They refused to pay me, and my former friend gave me my keys and I left with the car and I haven’t spoken to them since. They were calling and texting me nonstop and I ignored them. They had already spent the money they owed me, and they had no money and no way to get around.<br><br>One of their moms called me and scolded me. Telling me that I was a jerk for taking the car away from them after they had spent the money they owed me. And that they needed the car because they were in a bad spot and had no money or car. I told them that they should have thought about that before they spent all my money.
