I got a job offer to be in-house counsel to finance company and I am wondering what are the advantages/downsides to this move.

I did not like law school. I did not like the daily grind as a big law associate. I have been at a small firm for 4 years and I don't really like if much either.

The in-house deal seems like it will be a life changer. I won't have to deal with the stress of billable hours. The work seems straight forward and it is not expected that I will be answering emails at night or over the weekend. Plus, the work will be much more predictable than my current job.

However, I feel like I need to consider if I am throwing away my career. I am pretty young and I realize it would be very difficult for me to transition back to a law firm. Plus, I may miss out on partnership opportunities.

What role do in-house counsel play in a corporation? How do they view the in-house lawyers? How is progression in the company? What are the downsides? Should I just try to make partner?
