What exactly goes on between a soldier and a medic?

I’ve been fascinated with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq since I was a kid. Now, at 17, I’m seriously considering joining the army when I’m a bit older. However, I want to make sure I get clarification on everything before I enlist, because I don’t want to end up like some veterans in documentaries that get PTSD and flashbacks years after the war.

I’ve always imagined medics in the army to be like a sidekick that works with a soldier, following them everywhere they go in order to make sure their vitals are stable and that they don’t die of a heart attack whilst on the field.

What if the soldier gets shot? Like, what is the procedure for medics and soldiers when a soldier is injured? I’ve seen in Call of Duty that there are little symbols that pop up above the body of a person as soon as they die, and that these symbols aren’t there when a player is injured. Does this happen in real life?
