If you say "I'll do anything" when applying for a job, I'm not going to hire you.

It's been a bad hiring season and I'm sure COVID hasn't helped, it's just really hard to find people that want to work. I'm not a recruiter, just an owner, so I make time every day to interview potential employees. My company, office environment, 40 hours a week 20 an hour, pretty fantastic PTO policy and the benefits are solid for the industry.

So, I'll get to the point.

I've been told "I'll do anything" or "I'll do any job" by potential employees, and frankly I think it just makes you look unprepared and uninformed. I've gone through 3 rounds of interviews with an employee, and when I call them with the formal offer they aren't sure if they're taking the job. So, I ask them why they said "I'll do anything" when that isn't actually true. I've gotten answers like "I just want a job so bad I'll do anything" "I would literally do anything".

Well, I'm not going to hire you then. Why? I don't know what you want. I want to hire someone for a very specific position, and I don't think it's a great idea to hire someone that is willing to do any job just because it's a job. I'll do anything could be anything. I want to hire someone that says "I really want to do [this job]".
