How to network during the holiday season??

My SO and I will probably be attending several holiday parties this month, and I've always heard that the holiday season is great for networking. However, I don't want to come across as sleazy or like I'm only there to talk about work stuff and make connections. What is the best way to network in these sorts of social situations without being sleazy or obvious?
