If you struggle at school, try to work in a factory for a while. It will motivate you to pass every test and exam without preparation

My wife from Ukraine is studying to become a nurse for a few years. I am proud of her but when I was observing the way she was studying for her exams, I got a little bit worried. She does not pay attention to the lectures or what the teacher is saying. She does not take notes. If she does, she never looks at them. She never studies or reads her book until the very last day before an exam. There were times where she was studying for an exam all night and fell asleep during the exam. She never wakes up in time. She never studies for a test. She does not know what she is doing.

We were talking the other day about how I think she needs to be more serious about studying and try harder. She was telling me she doesn’t know how to study. She said she was good at remembering things quickly. I was telling her that if she was good at remembering things, she would remember things that the teachers were saying. She does not. I know she is capable of remembering things but she does not pay attention. She asks questions on the exam about things she should already know. I don’t want her to fail. When she fails, she has to retake the course. I don’t want her to feel bad.

I was thinking we should work in the factory for a few years and see how it feels. This will motivate her to study and read her books more and listen to her teachers. Working in a factory is very challenging. I know it would be very difficult for her. She would have to get up and work 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. Sometimes they would make us do the same activity for 8 hours a day. It’s exhausting. We would be on our feet the whole time. There would be no breaks at all. We would not be able to take a break even if we wanted to. We would have to eat in 30 minutes. This was very hard for me. I was always so tired that I was falling asleep while eating.

Sometimes our manager at the factory would push us to work harder. He would be screaming at us to work faster and harder. It would be very hard to hear him yelling at us. It felt like he was treating us like dogs. Sometimes he would embarrass us in front of our friends. He would call us names like “donkey.” He would tell us we were the laziest and stupidest people he had ever met. I knew he was just doing this to make us angry. He wanted us to feel like he was in control of us. He would walk around and get in our face. He was very intimidating. He would make us feel like we were nothing to him. It felt like he was talking down to us. He would talk down to us and make us feel like we were not good enough. He would say things like “You are nothing. You’re worthless. You won’t make it in life. You’re lazy. You’re stupid. You are just a factory worker. You are nothing but a factory worker. You are a loser. You will be working in the factory for the rest of your life. You are an idiot. You are dumb. You will never go anywhere in life. You will not succeed in life. You will fail. You are failing. You’re a failure.”

He would threaten us. He would tell us to work faster or he will fire us. He would say we were not good enough for the factory. He would say “If you’re not good enough for the factory, how do you expect to be good enough for anything else?” We knew he wanted us to lose our jobs. He wanted to scare us. He wanted us to think that we couldn’t do anything else. He would tell us we would never find a job anywhere else. He would say “If you can’t even work in a factory, how are you ever going to get a job anywhere else? You will never find a job anywhere else.”

He would make us feel bad. He would make us feel like we were prisoners. He would remind us we were nothing to him and that if he fired us, we were nothing. He would say “You are nothing without a job. If I fire you, you are nothing. If you can’t even work in a factory, how are you going to get a job anywhere else? You will never get a job anywhere else. You have nothing. You are nothing.” He would tell us we were too lazy. He would say we were too stupid. All he cared about was efficiency. He didn’t care how hard we were working as long as we were producing. He didn’t care if we were tired. He didn’t care if we were sick. All he cared about was efficiency.

He would demand 100% efficiency. He would tell us to produce 100% with no mistakes. He didn’t care if we were exhausted. He didn’t care if we were sick. All he cared about was getting his job done. He didn’t care about us. He didn’t care about our well-being. He didn’t care if we were tired. He didn’t care if we were sick. He didn’t care if we were hungry. He didn’t care if we were thirsty. He didn’t care if we had to go to the bathroom. All he cared about was efficiency. All he cared about was getting his job done. He didn’t care about us. He didn’t care about our well-being. All he cared about was efficiency.

Sometimes I would feel like crying. Sometimes we would get in trouble for talking. Sometimes we would get in trouble for laughing. Sometimes we would get in trouble for looking around. Sometimes we would get in trouble for not paying attention. Sometimes we would get in trouble for not listening. He would get mad at us for not paying attention. He would get mad at us for not listening. He would tell us to pay attention. He would tell us to listen. Sometimes we would get in trouble for not wearing the right shoes. Sometimes we would get in trouble for not wearing the right clothes. He would tell us to wear the right shoes. He would tell us to wear the right clothes. Sometimes we would get in trouble for not having the right tools. Sometimes we would get in trouble for not having the right equipment. He would tell us to have the right tools. He would tell us to have the right equipment.

Sometimes he would forbid us from talking to each other. He would tell us not to talk to each other. He would tell us not to communicate with each other. He would tell us not to help each other. He would tell us to work alone. He would tell us not to work together. He would tell us to focus on our own work. He would tell us to do our own job. He would tell us to focus on what we are doing. He would tell us to pay attention. He would tell us to listen. Sometimes we would get in trouble for helping each other. Sometimes we would get in trouble for working together. He would tell us not to help each other. He would tell us not to work together. He would tell us to work alone. He would tell us to focus on our own work. He would tell us to do our own job. He would tell us to focus on what we are doing. He would tell us to pay attention. He would tell us to listen.

I’m telling my wife to try it for a few years and see how it feels. After she does that, she will feel motivated to study and become a nurse. She will feel like she can succeed anywhere she goes.
