I think regular cheese tastes better than expensive cheese.

When I was a kid I ate a lot of Kraft American singles, Kraft macaroni & cheese, foods like that. Now that I’m an adult I realize that if I want to eat Kraft macaroni & cheese I don’t have to ask my mom for permission and I can do things like add a third of a cup of milk instead of a quarter of a cup, or throw in a sprinkle of paprika. It’s great.

Sometimes though I want to “class it up” a little and when I go to the grocery store I’ll buy the expensive brand. Expensive cheese has so many more flavors than regular cheese and the textures can be really cool. But I never want more than a small slice of expensive cheese before I get sick of it and start pickin around and eating the crackers or the fruit or whatever else I’m eating with the expensive cheese.

I once had a cranberry cheddar cheese spread that was like a rancid cranberry sauce mixed with cheese with the consistency of mayonnaise. I finished the entire tub, and it was delicious, but I only wanted to eat a nibble of it at a time. Fancy cheese just doesn’t taste as good as regular cheese.

I feel the same way about wine and beer. If I’m drinking at my own pace, drinking to get drunk, I prefer Coors Light to Guinness. If I’m drinking to savor the taste I’ll take a nice IPA over the Guinness. But I only want one or two of the IPA. After that I’d rather start drinking Coors Light and get fucked up.

I nipped some bourbon once and it was tasty. I haven’t tried mixing it with anything because I don’t want to water down that good quality bourbon, and I don’t want to drink that good quality bourbon because it’s so expensive, and honestly I don’t know what mixer would complement bourbon anyway.

What’s wrong with me? I don’t understand why cranberry cheddar cheese spreads and craft IPA aren’t the only things you’re allowed to buy. I don’t understand why my friends all like drinking craft beers when they want to get drunk. I don’t understand what my co-workers are doing when they mix a shot of Jack Daniels with a Bud Light. Why not skip the jack and drink two bud lights? Or if you want a chaser just drink a whole bud light in between each shot of jack and skip the mixing? It makes no sense to me.

And I grew up poor, I know a lot of people are defending fancy alcohol because they want something better after drinking cheap stuff. Everyone’s still got neighbours who make a little less money than they do. Why does everyone have to be so ashamed of cheap food?
