We were stalked in Barcelona and it was terrifying.

This happened in 2013 when I was travelling with my boyfriend (now husband). We were on a five week trip through Spain. We went to OVNI bar which has a great view of the sea. If you're ever in Barcelona, it's really cool.

We had a few drinks and left. My bf had given me a stupid look and I wanted to tell him off, so I walked forward with the intention of getting in front of him to have a look at his stupidity. I walked about three steps and noticed it was not him in front of me. I turned to my right and looked to him and said what's up- but my smile was cut short by the fact he was about five meters behind me. "Whoa, slow down" he said.

He caught up to me and we went to the car. The car was in a public carpark in the middle of a lot of restaurants. I forget what they're called- several restaurants sharing the one building and carpark. So there was a lot of people coming and going from all the restaurants. From memory the theme of the restaurants was Asian, but it was just an old building of about three levels.

I disappeared to the bathroom when we got to the car, locked myself in and then came out. We left and drove to the next town which was like a 45 minute drive. It's not really a big deal, we drove a lot on this trip and a 45 minute drive is nothing.

When we got to the next town we parked the car and had a drink. I had a few more drinks than him. I went to the toilet again and was slightly drunk so was stumbling out. I lost my shoe walking out and was like a cartoon character because one half of the door was locked and the other half of the door was open. I was trying to pick up my shoe but I was in a weird place on the floor.

I saw a man in a red shirt with white writing on it and I said to myself "wow, you look familiar". I thought I recognised him from the car park at the restaurant. I didn't really absorb that idea though and just walked by him. He was leaning in a corner where the street met another street as though he was waiting outside the bar we were in but he wasn't looking in that direction. He was looking at me.

I walked back to my boyfriend who was a few seconds behind me. I told him the guy in the red shirt looked familiar. He didn't like that and said let's go.

We walked to another bar, but I was a bit dizzy and walked in the wrong direction. He told me we had to walk the other way and I went back where we came from. We realised I was drunk so we went back to the hotel and went to bed.

I forgot about this until an hour or two after we went to bed. I was lying in bed and suddenly remembered that guy in the red shirt. Regarding him being familiar, I suddenly remembered that I saw him in the carpark where we first met. I had seen him standing by the stairs and he was leaning in the same way as outside the bar. I told my bf and he was terrified.

I told him not to worry, it's a tourist place and he was probably just a tourist too. But my bf was concerned. He had been suspicious at the first bar because he had been standing next to us when we were leaving. If I had of looked over my shoulder I would have seen him, but I was looking forward. He said he just happened to be standing at the edge of the restaurant, near the exit and facing us. He thought he was listening in on us originally, but then he thought maybe he was following us.

Now that we think about it, we remember he was standing in the bar when we left. We walked out and I went to the bathroom, then he left after us. He walked past us and we saw him again when I came out of the bathroom. We didn't exactly run to the car although I probably wasn't walking slowly because I really had to do my business, but he seemed to be walking quickly to get out of the restaurant.

I can tell this story about him but I don't know what his motives were. We were followed to the next town's bar, and we hung out at the bar for awhile. Maybe he was waiting for us to be vulnerable- walk home drunk or something, but we didn't. We left after that first drink in the next town and we just went back to the hotel.

Looking back, we feel like we were being stalked and it was probably a case of tourist kidnapping. My bf and I are both Australians who live in Australia but he is originally from South America and I am originally from Europe. We both had darker features and were pretty obviously tourists. We both had the same accent as we met in Australia and have similar Aussie accent.

I don't know what would have happened if I had gone out to the car alone and he was following us. Maybe he wanted to abduct me, maybe he wanted to abduct both of us. We'll never know. We keep thinking about it because it's not normal for someone to follow you from one bar to the next and from one town to the next. It was hugely unusual.

Now that I'm writing this I'm thinking of all of the details. The fact he was standing by the stairs in the carpark as we were leaving the restaurants, the fact that he was leaning in the corner with his arms crossed in the same way outside each bar. The fact that he walked out of the restaurant as we were walking out. It's not weird that he was in all of these places, it is weird that he was behaving in exactly the same way in all of these places.

He obviously stands out to me because he wore a red shirt with white letters in what looked like Mandarin. If you stalk people because you want to abduct them from touristy places in Barcelona, you probably don't speak English. But maybe you do.

Let's not meet, guy in red shirt with white letters.
