I'm currently reading the LIGHTBRINGER series by Brent Weeks and for the last 1000 pages I've been wondering what is the ethnicity of the population. Fantasy and pseudo-medieval setting, so I would expect European, but...

- all the character have English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish first names;
- surnames are either the same or very common English slang/offensive words;
- skin color is European-white;
- eye color is European-blue;
- other physical characteristics are European;
- clothing is European;
- food is European;
- the nature is European;
- climate is European;
- the world is based on Europe;
- architecture is European;

and then suddenly there is a random Brown person, a random Black person, a random Chinese person (but Chinese, not, for example, Japanese or Korean), random African animals roaming Europe, random Native American animals roaming Europe, random South American animals roaming Europe, random Middle Eastern food, random Middle Eastern clothing, random Middle Eastern buildings and random Middle Eastern climate.

Or, on the other side, you have Europeans in the Middle East, Europeans in Africa, Europeans in Asia, Middle Eastern animals roaming Europe...
