British people invading other countries is not an achievement. Stop being proud of it.

I’m a British guy, this isn’t intended to be a hate for my own country thread but let’s talk about something that really annoys me. Whenever I travel I’m often met with the phrase ‘Oh you’re from the UK, why did you invade my country?’ I’m met with that phrase in South Africa, India, Egypt, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia and the list goes on. They’re not angry but more just confused.

I think there’s a bit of a disconnect here. A lot of people in the UK don’t consider this to be invasion, but an achievement. Why the hell does anyone think this? British people would be outraged if a middle eastern country or South America invaded us but if we do it to others it’s completely fine? It’s not okay, it’s absolutely a terrible thing to do and we should be ashamed of it.

If you think we did a good thing by ‘civilising’ these countries then do you think someone would be able to come in to the UK and do the same thing? The answer is no. They’re independent nations just like ours and they should be treated as such.

We say that we should be proud of our country and it’s empire, the fact that we were able to control so many other nations for so long is a feat. Why the hell would we be proud of this? It’s absolutely ridiculous. You can’t invade countries, murder innocent people, steal from them and enslave people and be proud of it. It’s insane.
