My mother, who has dementia, looks at a photo of a strange man from her childhood, and tells us she's never seen the photo before and has no idea who he is. Is it possible for a person to look at a photo they've seen thousands of times and have zero recollection of it?

Or does this mean something else? Maybe there's another time line or alternate reality of this photo and in this particular one her body reacted this way. We've been told she doesn't have very much time left, but until her passing I want to know what's actually going on in that mind of hers. It's been an interesting experience, but I do miss her.

Edit: I also fully believe she'll never remember it, and I'm not trying to convince her otherwise. It's more the reaction to it, someone with dementia having no recollection of it i assume has never been documented before.
