What I think is the most useful and most disliked thing you can do if you want to learn a new language

You have to talk. A lot. Every single day. Talk to people on voice apps, talk to people at work or school or where you shop, talk to yourself when nobody else is around. Use every single thing to improve your speaking and listening. Talk about whatever it is that you think about. Talk about whatever it is that you do. Talk about the news, talk about politics, talk about the weather. Just talk.

And I mean REAL talking. Not, "Oh, today I..." and then stop. Use full sentences or paragraphs with transition words and side tangents and anything else that real people use when they talk.

Just talking will also make you listen more. You have to hear what's going on around you and react to it. If you're at work and people are talking, pay attention. If you're at the store and someone asks you a question, respond. If you see another person from your country talking where you live now, try to join their conversation and practice. And if you see someone else from your country talking to someone from your new country, stop and pay attention.

You can also try to change how you talk. If you're shy, then talk more. If you talk too much and don't listen, then talk less. If you don't listen, then listen to anything and anyone. If you don't know what to say, then look at the conversation you're in and figure out something to say. If you want to say something but you don't know how, then use something like Google translate to find the words. If you don't know what the other person said, then ask them to repeat and try to write it down. And then talk about it if you want.

If you want to get really good fast, then you have to talk more. You'll learn the language faster than if you do anything else. And that's why nobody does it. We don't want to embarrass ourselves. We don't want to make mistakes. We want to be able to talk perfectly before we talk at all. But you can't talk perfectly if you don't talk.
