I couldnt sailing. I hate it. I’m not a morning person and I find it boring. But I really love my wife.
She grew up sailing with her dad, but stopped when she was 19. She started again just after we met, and I’d watch her leave on weekends and come back with the biggest smile on her face. I’d ask her about it and she’d always just say it’s fun, “you should come”. I finally agreed in february when my office told everyone to stay home. I figured, fuck it, I have to be home anyway.
I was completely overwhelmed by the whole process and couldn’t keep up. I’m 6’4 and my wife is 5’2, so I could reach higher and I’m a lot stronger, but she just yelled at me at every turn and told me what to do. She kicked me off after the second day, which I was actually pretty happy about.
In august our marina had a regatta, and she thought it would be a great idea if I could watch from her boat while she competes. She said it would be better for both of us, I wouldn’t have to travel to the beach and she could focus on her race. I agreed and got on her boat around 8am. When she was ready to go I untied the lines for her and said “see ya”. She looked at me like I had just said the most disgusting thing I could have said to her. I asked what and she told me I should’ve wished her luck. I was like “fuck, really?”. She looked at me and said “you’re fucking lucky I don’t make you swim back”. And then just turned around and left. That was a really shit moment for me.
She did end up winning, and was in high spirits for the rest of the day. A week later she left a copy of some sailing book on my desk, and had written “Required reading. I expect to see you volunteering in two weeks.” On the inside of the cover. I read it all in one night and made some notes. Two weeks later I was in the parking lot at 7:30, helping them launch and tie up to the dock.
I’ve helped out seven times now and still have no idea what I’m doing half the time, but they’re all really friendly and seem to appreciate the help. It’s definitely made my wife happy and I don’t have to sit at home on the weekends. The only problem is my wife’s crew. They’re all older and obviously experienced sailors, so they’re very particular about what they want done. I feel like I’m being bossed around by my wife, her friends, my roommate, and the neighbors every time I’m out there. I’ve hinted to my wife I don’t like it, but it’s clear she’s on their side.
