Let's pretend you're a middle class family (2 kids), one income, making about $60,000 a year, with $3500 in savings and a $3500 credit card limit.

Last night you come home from work and the refrigerator is dead. Yesterday your fridge was working. The bottle of water in there is room temperature. The fridge is 15 years old, and it's dead. Would you expect to pay out of pocket for a new one, or would you expect to put it on a credit card?

This morning, your brother calls you. Your Dad is in the emergency room. He was in a car accident, and the hospital is a few hours away. Your mom needs a ride back to her house in the afternoon, and your dad will need a ride back home later in the week when he's released from the hospital, which may be one or two days. Your Dad has good insurance, so you don't expect him to have a bill. However, you will lose a day of work to drive them around, and will also buy fast food for you and your mom while you're driving her around. Would you expect to pay out of pocket for a new fridge, and the gas and lost wages for driving your folks around?

Or would you put the fridge and car trip on a credit card?
