I just caught my student on camera robbing a bank. Do I go to the police? What do I do? Advice?

I’m a special education teacher, and I’m doing a lot of home visits this year. I have a GoPro camera on my car when I’m driving. I turn it off when I arrive at a child’s house.

The GoPro camera has been nice for parent teacher conferences during home visits bc it’s captured car accidents, speeding tickets (I was speeding), and me almost being car jacked. It’s a nice little camera.

I did a home visit last night and arrived at a student’s house at 6:30pm. I visit this student twice a week.

I turned off the camera when I arrived at the student’s house (6:30pm).

I left the student’s house at 8pm and turned the camera back on when I put the car in drive (8:00pm).

The camera records in 12 minute loops, so it starts recording over itself after 12 minutes. It only saves the last 12 minutes of recording, which is why I only turn it on when I’m driving.

So the camera starts recording again at 8:00pm.

I had to stop for gas on the way home, and while I was pumping gas I watched the news inside the gas station. There was breaking news about a bank that was robbed at 7:30pm. The robber didn’t wear a mask and had very distinctive hair. I remember the hair because it stuck out to me.

When I got home, I decided to check the video on my GoPro camera to see if it picked up the license plate of the bank robber. I live in a small town and the bank that was robbed is on the exact same street I was driving on at 8:00pm.

I watched the video on the camera and 10 minutes after I turned the camera on (8:00pm-8:10pm), the bank robber’s car drives by me. The license plate is very clear. The distinctive hair is very clear. The car make is very clear. I can even see the car’s sunroof.

The police don’t have any leads on the bank robber yet. They don’t know the car make, license plate, or anything.

But, what’s creepy, is that the bank robber must have driven past the student’s house I was visiting between the time the robbery occurred (7:30pm) and the time I turned my camera on (8:00pm) because the student’s house is on the same street as the bank. The bank was robbed at 7:30pm and the robber drove past me at 8:10pm.

The student’s house is very close to the bank, probably one mile. It’s very possible the robber drove by the student’s house between the time the camera turned off at the student’s house (6:30pm) and the time it turned on again (8:00pm).

But the creepy part is, the student’s house is on the way to the bank. For example: student’s house—>bank—>highway—>my house

I drove past the bank to get to my house, which is why the robber’s car drove past me at 8:10pm. It was heading towards the same highway I was heading towards, and the student’s house is in between my house and the bank, so the robber must have also driven past the student’s house headed towards the highway.

I’m really minutely explaining the geography of this because I think it’s weird and I’m wondering if the student was involved. But I explained it wrong because I’m tired. Lol.

So here’s the thing. If I turn my video over to the police, it will very clearly show that the student’s house is on this street. They’ll be able to find the house by zooming in on the video.

But if I give them the video, then I’m accusing the student of being involved in the robbery. The police will see the student’s house and automatically wonder if they were involved.

I feel like I’m in a weird spot. I have information that could catch a criminal but don’t want to accuse a student. It’s a middle schooler.

I wonder if the police will even care about having the video though? I’m sure they get tips like this all the time and the tips turn out to be useless.

I’m worried that if I tell the student’s parents I went to the police, they’ll find out where I live and hurt me.

I’m scared my student is in a gang.

I’m just confused lol. What do I do?
