Does anyone else think the idea of "backpacking" and "hostels" is a total joke

I'm currently in Cambodia and I've been riding around on my dirt bike, staying in villages and sleeping in the most basic, dirtiest hotels I can find.

I went through one of the main cities in Cambodia and stopped in a very touristy hostel as I had a couple of days off my bike. I was shocked at all the 20 year old "backpackers" walking around with brand new, bright orange backpacks. It was like they just bought the most expensive camping equipment from REI and decided to "backpack" through Asia.

This hostel was basically a 5 star hotel. 3 pools, 2 bars, a full restaurant, rooms with private bathrooms etc etc. There were about 100 other tourists there and I saw at least 50 sort of rinky dink, brightly colored bags that all looked to be brand new and expensive.

I don't think any of these people have actually ever gone camping in the US or backpacked through an actual wilderness. It's just a bunch of kids going on their "world trip" at their parents expense.

Edit: Quick update. I have 12 months of traveling on a motorbike left. I'm currently in Cambodia and headed south to Malaysia and Indonesia. I have 20k per year and I make another 20-30k by working remotely from coffeeshops. I'm not some rich kid, I've been over seas for years and make good money in tech.

A ton of the comments too were about safety and it's 100% true, as a young woman it is much more difficult to travel and you do have to take a ton of extra precautions. I think sort of as a woman I have an advantage as well, in my current location I'm a total anomaly as a young single woman traveling alone by myself, so I get a ton of locals that are excited to talk to me and show me around. I make sure to only stay in hotels that have 24/7 staff and know the local police sort of as a last resort if anything were to happen.
